HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Pass Both Parts (Reading and Math) of the 10th Grade FCAT or meet the ACT/SAT alternative (not a given 15 math/reading on ACT; SAT-410R/370M)
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Successfully complete a minimum of 24 high school credits with the mandated ones listed on the next slide

(this is a minimum; you can earn more)
  • ˝ Performing Arts and ˝ Vocational credit OR 1 whole credit in either
  • ˝ Life Management Skills (LMS ) credit
  • ˝ Personal Fitness credit

FUTURE SUCCESS
  • Foreign language is not a requirement for graduation, but you need it for Florida Bright Futures and entrance into a 4-year Florida public university.
  • This could help if you enter a field where speaking different languages could be advantageous.
  • Be involved in school and/or community-based activities.  This looks great for scholarships, college applications, and resumes.  It will help you find things that could be an interest for you after high school.  Plus, it could be fun!
  • Make sure if you have volunteer hours that you log them.

COLLEGE & CAREER IDEAS
  • Take College & Military Entrance Exams -*ACT.org & Collegeboard.com (SAT) for colleges & universities                          *College Placement Test (CPT) for community college entrance at high school or www.lakecitycc.edu
  •     *ASVAB at high school for military
  • Visit colleges in & talk to recruiters of military branches you are interested in.

COLLEGE VISITS
  • Seniors are allowed 5 visits (excused absences)
  • Juniors are allowed 2 visits (excused absences)
  • Prior approval is required (at least 5 days).  Forms are available from turning tower in the Guidance Office
  • If you have passed the 10th grade FCAT, when the test is given in the Spring, these dates would be excellent to use

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
  • Use Internet search engines to find colleges that fit your needs (including www.fortwhitehighschool.org , www.ACT.org & www.Collegeboard.com & www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/myfsa )
  • Fill out applications early
  • Get forms for official transcripts to be sent from FWHS to institutions you are applying to from Mrs. Barton in guidance
  • Fees are usually involved in the college application process and vary by institution

FAFSA
  • http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
  • Gather the documents you need
    Start with your Social Security Number, driver's license, income tax return, bank statements and investment records.
  • Print a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet
    Write in your answers and gather your parent's information then transfer the data to FAFSA on the Web.
  • Plan how to sign your FAFSA
    Sign electronically with a U.S. Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN) or by mailing in a signature page.

  • Speed up the process by signing your FAFSA electronically with your PIN. Your parent can sign electronically too.
  • Check your eligibility for federal student aid.

  • To meet the Federal Student Financial Aid deadline:
  • Apply as early as possible beginning January 1st of each year.
  • Schools and states have their own deadlines. Contact them for exact deadline dates

  • Use both options on the site for finding information about loans, state grants, and scholarships for Florida high school graduates

  • Some are free; some charge a fee

  • Use a search engine (Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, Google, Metacrawler, etc.) to find more sites

FWHS SCHOLARSHIP FLYERS
  • Attain from homeroom teacher during a class meeting throughout the year
  • If you are absent from homeroom, fill out a guidance request form to see Mrs. Rossin and pick up a copy of the flyer
  • Use the flyer to contact the person or group listed about the scholarship(s) you are wishing to pursue
  • Visit www.fortwhitehighschool.org

  • Must have a standard high school Diploma (not a Certificate of Completion) to receive reward if eligible
  • Must meet the requirements on the brochure and at www.facts.org for 1 of the 3 scholarships & apply online at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org by your graduation date during your 7th semester in high school
  • Sign green sheet before you leave today!

FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES
  • If awarded, you must use it/claim it within 2 years of graduation (military exception)
  • If awarded, you must take at least 6 non-remedial semester hours (usually 2 classes) per semester at a Florida post-secondary institution
  • 3 Different Scholarships:
    •  Florida Academic Scholar (FAS),
    • Florida Medallion Scholar (FMS), and
    • Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholar (GSV)

  • Go online and check your individual graduation reports at www.facts.org
  • All courses and grades that can be used are listed
  • Private institutions in the state of Florida will use these based on the average of the Florida public university rates
  • They use a GPA based on specific courses (not necessarily all your courses)

Florida Academic Scholar (FAS)
  • 3.5 weighted G.P.A. in 15 academic credits (4 English, 3 math, 3 Natural Science, 3 social science {1 World History, 1 American History, 0.5 Economics, 0.5 American Government}, 2 foreign languages)
  • 75 community service hours
  • Test scores of at least 28 on ACT Composite and/or 1270 combined SAT

Florida Medallion Scholar (FMS)
  • 3.0 weighted G.P.A in 15 academic credits (4 English, 3 math, 3 Natural Science, 3 Social Science {1 World History, 1 American History, 0.5 Economics, 0.5 American Government}, 2 foreign language)


  • No community service


  • Test scores of 20 on ACT Composite of 970 on SAT combined

Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholar (GSV)
  • 3.0 weighted G.P.A in 15.5 academic credits (4 English, 3 math, 3 Natural Science, 3 Social Science {1 World History, 1 American History, 0.5 Economics, 0.5 American Government}, 1 Performing Fine or Practical Art, 0.5 LMS, 1 PE)
  • 3 Vocational Job-Prep or Technology Education Program credits in one vocational program
  • No community service
  • Test scores of ACT English 17, ACT Read 18, ACT Math 19 or SAT Verbal 440 , SAT Math 440, or CPT Sentence Skills 83, CPT Reading 83, CPT Algebra 72
